50-Acre Mango Orchard Irrigation in Thailand: ZRI Solar Pump Setup & 5-Year Data

Diesel-to-solar retrofit · 1,620 Nam Dok Mai trees · 2.8 kW ZRI on 4.5 kWp · Read time ~6 min

The short answer. A 50-acre mango farm in Chiang Mai (20 acres under drip, 1,620 trees) replaced a diesel pump with a 2.8 kW ZRI submersible on a 4.5 kWp array through a 3 kW MPPT controller. It pumps ~90 m³/day at peak against 75 m TDH, delivered ~73,000 m³ over five years, cost 423,675 THB gross and paid back in ~11 months after the 15% DEDE subsidy.

1. The farm

Parameter Value
Location Ban Pong, Hang Dong, Chiang Mai (340 m elevation)
Farm / irrigated area 50 acres total; 20 acres drip (1,620 trees, 7 m × 7 m)
Well 6" borehole, 62 m deep; static 18 m, dynamic 26 m; yield 25 m³/h
Pre-solar 7.5 HP diesel pump + 10 kVA generator (~400,000 THB/year)

2. Sizing

Peak fruit-fill demand: 1,620 trees × 55 L ≈ 90 m³/day. A 50 m³ elevated reservoir decouples daytime pumping from 24-hour gravity drip.

TDH component Value
Dynamic water level 26 m
Elevation to reservoir +12 m
Pipe friction (180 m of 3" HDPE) +9 m
Drip pressure (1.5 bar) +18 m
Safety margin (10%) +6.5 m
Design TDH 75 m

Selected the ZRI 4SD24/11 (2.8 kW, 42 m³/h at 75 m) over smaller and larger models. Array: ten Trina 450 W mono panels (4,500 Wp) in two strings of five, Voc 206 V / Vmp 174 V — inside the ZRI PD3000-48 controller's 120–260 V MPPT window. Tilt 18°, true south.

4. Installation and wiring

The old diesel pump was pulled on a tripod; the ZRI pump was fitted with a brass check valve and 316 stainless safety cable, then lowered on 3" HDPE riser to 30 m depth. Surface pipe ran 180 m to the reservoir. On commissioning day, flow reached 41,800 L/h at midday under clear sky — within 0.5% of the pump curve.

6. Economics and yield

Line Value

Diesel + maintenance avoided ~400,000 THB/yr
Payback ~11 months

Consistent drip pressure lifted yield from 58.5 t to 73.2 t (+25%), raised export-grade share from 62% to 71%, and cut reject fruit from 8% to 5%.

Steady pressure moved 25% more fruit and 9 points more export-grade.

7. Certifications and compliance

Equipment: modules to IEC 61215/61730; controller to IEC 62109; pump carries ISO 9001, CE, RoHS.
Thai regulatory: borehole under a DGR abstraction permit; pumping system registered with DEDE for the 15% rebate.

8. Maintenance and lessons

Wash panels quarterly (restores 8–12% after dust), flush drip filters, and annually test per-string Voc/Isc. In five years the only outages were a controller surge alarm, a seized mechanical flow meter (replaced), a loose wellhead cable and a stuck float. Panels, pump, controller and riser had zero failures.

Quarterly panel washing is the highest-return task in dusty Chiang Mai.

FAQ

How much water does a mango orchard need?

About 55 L per mature Nam Dok Mai tree per day at peak fruit-fill — roughly 90 m³/day for 1,620 trees.

What size solar pump powers a mango farm?

A 2.8 kW ZRI submersible on a 4.5 kWp array through a 3 kW MPPT controller, lifting ~75 m.

What is the payback?

About 11 months after the 15% DEDE subsidy against ~400,000 THB/year avoided.

Do I need a licence?

Yes — DGR abstraction permit and DEDE registration for the subsidy.

Authority statement: compiled by AgriSolar Engineering (Thailand) from controller logs, flow-meter data and DGR/DEDE paperwork. Figures are measured for this orchard and vary with site. Confirm current DEDE rates and DGR rules before quoting. Last updated September 2026.
